The location is fantastic, and the staff and food very good.
The interior of the hotel could do with modernising to reflect the price.
Excellent meals - catering staff very friendly and helpful
On arrival I was quite thirsty but there was no kettle in room. Telephone did not appear to be working so had to go down four floors to reception where I asked for a kettle to be brought up to room. Two hours later I had to go down to reception again, only one lift worked during my stay, and asked once again for a kettle. On this occasion the receptionist remained seated in the office and made me feel I was being a nuicance. I mentioned the phone didn't seem to be working but she wasn't interested. Kettle brought up within 10 minutes
Friendly helpfull staff Good allround facilties, the pool/spa and location been the main reason for booking this hotel with the great british weather.
The only real let down was the state of the building allthough was clean. In real need of investment and getting a good bit past quirky? Allthough I would consider staying here again I would check first to see what has changed since it has been bought by britania chain?
The breakfast buffet was good
The reception staff were appallingly rude and tried to charge me twice for my room. The room itself was atrocious; much smaller than indicated by the pictures online. There was a television that did not work (allegedly a hotel-wide issue), rust on the taps, damp in the ceiling and huge piles of bird droppings on the window ledges. The toilet didn't flush. The jacuzzi in the basement, one of the principle reasons for our booking, apparently hasn't worked 'for 8-9 months'. Several rooms are considered 'below budget' according to the duty manager and so are terrible value for money. I would never stay here or any Britannia Hotel again- save your money and use one of the excellent bed and breakfast's nearby instead!
excellent location for beach and shopping. Breakfast was excellent. Reception staff very pleasant and helpful. Oppulent entrance and staircase, still gorgeous despite its age.
Carpark too far away for anyone with mobility problems. Hotel has seen better days, but it still is beautiful , if shabby.
We love Scarborough and we love the Royal Hotel. We have stayed here many times. Staff are friendly and the breakfast is excellent. Plenty of hot water and shower pressure. We do hope that the Royal will be given some tlc under the new ownership, as it has become a little run down over the past few years. We will return!!!
some corridors a little shabby
Hotel location fine near shops upper level of scarborough. Food was nice and longe to relax in was nice. Staff were lovely, polite and smart looking a credit to the company.
Pool area worse for wear needs investment badly, put a downer on what should be a classy hotel. Rooms could also be updated some furniture worse for wear.
Room was far too warm the undrerfloor heating is not controlable, when we asked for a fan receptiopn wasn't very helpful infact stone faced the only one who cracked a smile was the girl from the Philipeans. Our room wasn't very clean ( a lot of dust where the vacumb cleaner doesn't pass) We finaly got a fan on day 2 but this rattled more than Jed Clampits truck so was useless. The leisure facilities are not very clean either and it was obvious that the spa hasn't worked for a considerable time nor has the steam room, the pool was like a hot bath and the surrounding areas dirty that said the attendant was very friendly and helpful. Car parking is quite a distance away and costs £7.20 per day with discount voucher.
The location and views were excellent. The faded grandure of the decor and the fittings were lovely to look at.
Our room was poorly ventilated, above the bins and kitchens (noise at all times) and in sad need of redecoration. There were virtually no staff - on Sunday one staff member seemed to be running the restaraunt, bar and bar snacks. This was clearly too much for one person and it was only his good nature that kept us in the venue. The hotel looks like it is decaying - it might have been exceptional but that was 20-30 years ago and low staff numbers are not the way to compensate for this.
Good valure for money the old features and good breakfast
Function room was lovely. Food and service at tables excellent. Grandeur of the hotel wonderful.
We couldn't find the room because the room number wasn't on the direction plaques until right next to the room when a small paper ticket had been added. Very time consuming and frustrating. Kitchen extractor under the room window. Window could not be closed fully! Ceiling covering in bathroom hanging down at 45degrees exposing plasterwork (50cm x 20cm). We were given another room on complaining. General condition of hotel room needed improvement and 1 towel filthy and wet. Bathroom not very clean. We had to stay at this hotel because the function we were attending was here. Function and food and service excellent.
Staff very helpfull Excellent restaurant facilities
Room was very basic and thrown together for the price we paid Some leisure facilities were not available
The location of the Royal is very good and the reception and main areas as very impressive.
The Royal is in need of a bit of tlc. The lift was broken which made the journey up the stairs difficult with small children.
I was taking my wife away for the weekend to celebrate her 40th birthday!! It was the worst choice of hotel I have made...
